EPL GW 2 got even steamier as it drew closer to an end with West Ham pulling a once-in-a-lifetime victory when they nicked Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea; with Aston Villa showing new smarts as they hammered Everton. Here’s how the action played out.

West Ham Nick Chelsea

I think we should have seen this coming, especially after West Ham won the UEFA Conference League a while back. David Moyes’s West Ham is not any other team that we can just ignore anymore. Chelsea should have known this.. but they didn’t. Chelsea, now under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, were in for a rude shock as despite dominating much of the first half (in reply to West Ham’s initial goal), they were unseated and eventually nicked by the underdog.

What a Ham! West Ham

West Ham opened the scoring early in the game with Nayef Aguerd scoring in the 7th minute. Chelsea sort of came to and equalized via Carney Chukwuemeka in the 28th minute. West Ham, despite seemingly being dominated in the rest of the first half, managed to take advantage of Chelsea’s sloppy defense and regained their edge right after halftime. West Ham scored their second goal in the 53rd minute thanks to a Michail Antonio strike.

Aguerd Sent Off

Things didn’t draw down as West Ham’s goal scorer Nayef was sent off the pitch in the 67th minute, after a second yellow card and consequent red card. Despite their tremendous performance by then, West Ham were still making mistakes.

Sloppy Debut for Caicedo at Chelsea

The good thing, however, was that Caicedo’s debut for Chelsea wasn’t a glowing one but instead turned sloppy. Caicedo, brought in by Pochettino to rescue Chelsea from embarrassment by a possible loss, only came in to make things worse. His sloppiness culminated in an aggressive tackle, winning West Ham a penalty. Chelsea had lost their penalty earlier but West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta was not about to make the same mistake; and converted the stoppage time penalty making it 3-1 in favor of West Ham.

Woe Pochettino

Pochettino is under a lot of strife at the moment. He is supposed to be Chelsea’s new Mourinho but instead, his strategies seem to be taking too long before they are effective. Pochettino is a wonderful coach but Chelsea, especially now being comprised of a lot of new faces, is a young team that could take some time before they get used to and entuned to his style of play. As such, the woes may not be over soon for Pochettino and it will be upon him to persevere and see Chelsea back to its glory blue days.

Aston Villa Hammer Everton

Aston Villa were another surprisingly strong team in EPL GW 2 who pulled off a classic victory against Everton. Everton were good, don’t get me wrong, but when their woes started, including a Calvert-Lewin injury, things seemed to unravel for the team. Villa played a beautiful game, opening the scoring in the 18th minute via John McGinn.

Bailey and teammate celebrating
Leon Bailey was the matchmaker for West Ham, as they pulled off one of their all-time great performances. Source: Sky.

Douglas Luiz capitalized on a penalty and made it two in the 24th minute with Leon Bailey, the team’s matchmaker, scoring his in the 51st minute. As if to stamp their prowess, Jhon Duran then came on to cap their lead with their fourth goal in the 75th minute. Everton could do nothing but just watch by as Aston Villa showed all of us that they are no longer a team we can just ignore.
