The 2022 Mazda CX-5 Review: Big Things Come in Small Packages

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a best-of-its-class mid-range SUV that is just kitted enough to handle an almost thorough beating. It has just enough oomph to serve you as a city/town car with an occasional visit to the farm. It comes with numerous options and trims, allowing you to get the best it can offer but with options if you are constrained by a budget.

Mazda CX-5 Pricing

The base for the Mazda CX-5 starts at just above $27,000 with the Turbo signature trim going for just over $39,000 for the 2022 model. Depending on your country, a 2021 Mazda CX-5 could serve you just as well and come at a cheaper and more affordable price. Experts recommend that you go for the Turbo trim that is priced at just over $37,000 for the 2022 Mazda CX-5.

Engine and Performance

The Mazda CX-5 comes with a standard 187 horsepower (hp) engine that has four cylinders. You can also get other engine options including a 250 horsepower turbo-charged engine version that accelerates faster. These engines all come with a six-speed automatic transmission that is snappy and quick to react.

The Mazda CX-5 boasts only two engine versions; one is a 2.5-liter engine with the other being a more powerful turbocharged one. For braking, in the signature version, the brake pedal is assuring and responds without having to push it excessively. All the models have minimal road noise and do satisfactorily well on poorly paved roads.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

The base 2.5 engine version is rated at 30 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway and 27mpg on normal roads. The turbocharged engine version is rated 27mpg on the highway and 22mpg on city roads or what we call ‘normal’ well-trafficked roads. In tests by experts on a 75mpg road, the base engine version did 32mpg while the turbocharged version did 30mpg.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Capacity

The interior of the Mazda CX-5 is impressive and boasts a sleek design that gives that above-average cockpit feeling. The car’s interior beauty is compounded by its floor-hinged accelerator pedal that tops off that premium feel.

Infotainment

Its lines and curves on the dash are impeccable with a 10.3-inch infotainment screen in the middle. The Mazda CX-5 comes pre-kitted with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto entertainment systems. There’s an option, however, to connect the vehicle to Mazda Connected Services.

With this option, you experience a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and remote control for several functions with their smartphone app. To top all that off, the center console comes with a deep tray and a bin with a removable shelf.

Mazda CX-5 Trunk Size

For the boot or trunk, the Mazda CX-5 has a capacity of up to nine suitcases and is helped by having a completely flat load floor. The trunk also comes with several thoughtful nooks to keep small items such as a smartphone and so on.

Warranty, Maintenance, and Safety

The manufacturer warranty for the Mazda CX-5 is capped at three years or 36,000 miles while the powertrain warranty is capped at 5 years or 60,000 miles. Unfortunately, the Mazda CX-5 does not come with complimentary scheduled maintenance.

In terms of safety, the Mazda CX-5 comes with standard driver-assistance tech with numerous optional assists. The package entails standard lane-keeping assistance with lane-departure warning. There’s also standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and standard adaptive cruise control.

Our Verdict

The Mazda CX-5 is a worthy buy for a city/town car. It’s perfect for short-distance travel and the best in its class even as it may lack the oomph to push that extra mile. It has a decent fuel economy and is very affordable. It’s a vehicle that won’t disappoint and we give it an honest 6/10.
