A few months after being brought on as Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim’s position is increasingly under scrutiny. Man United’s poor start to the 2025-26 Premier League Season has put into question Amorim’s managerial prowess, with the club having only garnered 4 points after their first 3 games of the season. But that’s not all…
United Dropped from the Carabao Cup After a Shocking Loss to Grimsby Town
Ruben Amorim’s troubles deepened further when the club was essentially booted from the Carabao Cup (English Football League Cup) after losing out to Grimsby Town on penalties.
Normally, one of the English Football League’s main contenders, United’s dismal performance was not only shocking but the latest in a series of failures that have brought to question whether Amorim remains a proper fit for the legendary club.
Reports following the scathing loss suggested that United’s football management team, steered by Ineos, was increasingly ready to let Amorim go. These events are quite similar to the events preceding Erik ten Hag’s departure; where the management team first insisted on keeping him on, only for ten Hag to be shown the door a few weeks later?
Mind you, Erik ten Hag has recently been sacked as Bayer Leverkusen’s manager.
Has Amorim Failed Manchester United?
A complicated question. But I would argue it’s the wrong question, considering the state in which Amorim found the club.
Manchester United can’t seem to regain their footing right from Fergie’s departure until now. Something left the club when Sir Alex Ferguson put up his coaching boots; The team lost its soul, it’s essence.

It is quite astounding how one man can have such momentous impact on a team, and the current state of affairs is testament to Fergie’s impact at United. And as United’s most legendary coach, his impact (or the lack of it) can still be felt today.
Therefore, I would argue that what the management team ought to have been looking for was a coach who’d not only guide the players on the pitch, but also play the role of a father figure.
That’s what, I think, helped former coach, David Moyez, to succeed and win the 2023 UEFA Conference League with Everton. This is especially the case when dealing with an increasingly young team and with a considerable roster of new and young players.

You can see the magic of youth at work at Chelsea, with their recent Club World Cup win. When young players are coupled with a coach who can be a teacher, even in life, then those players are very likely to succeed.
Maybe this is what #Amorim has failed to attain. It is not his fault—I believe—and as such, it’s not much about whether he has failed the team, but rather, whether he was the best fit for Man Utd right from the beginning.
Should United Sack Ruben Amorim?
Since the EPL has just kicked off for a new season, and with the players now only acclimating to the Amorim way of things, I do not believe it would be wise for #MUFC to sack Ruben Amorim.
In my view, it is still way too early to tell whether Amorim will have a positive impact on the team. Beyond that, it is also still too early to measure his impact in terms of results. Yes, United lost to Grimsby, but the players did put in a superb effort, first drawing and then pushing the game from play to penalties where they lost out.

And with the new EPL season still in its infancy, then there really aren’t any concrete, measurable results—over a significant enough length of time—by which to judge Amorim’s impact.
Will Manchester United End Their Current Slump?
Not in the near term, I’d imagine. To get Manchester United back to the Fergie glory days—I feel—will take systematic reforms at the club, including reforming the culture, attitude, value systems, organizational culture, and management styles at United—both at the pitch and at the boardroom level. In essence, Man Utd must find their ‘new’ soul.
Their new belief system. Their new perspective and an entirely different way of looking at football and their place in it.

‘The New Manchester United’
Man United should deprioritize celebrating their legacy for now, and come up with ‘the New Manchester United’. A new style of football, a new approach to financing and managing it, and a new style of tending to and caring for the health, wealth, and well-being of all the team’s stakeholders—especially its players.
That is the only way Glory will return to Old Trafford, not withstanding whether Amorim will be the team’s manager or not.
So, no. Man United should not sack Ruben Amorim. Not for now at least. Cheers.
