Matchday 3 of 6 of the Champions League Group Stage was goal-packed with Bayern Munich, Ajax, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester City scoring over four goals in their respective victories. Man City beat Club Brugge 5-1. Real Madrid showed their true colors beating Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0. Ajax upended Borussia Dortmund 4-0.
Bayern Munich enjoyed a stellar performance from Leroy Sane who scored a brace in their 4-0 win against Benfica. Chelsea beat Malmo 4-0, in a game where Jorginho scored a brace. Villareal on its part beat Young Boys 4-1. On the other hand, Sporting beat Besiktas 4-1 in what was an impressive performance.
The Good-But-Can-Do-Better Teams: Man Utd, PSG, & Liverpool
Falling below expectations were Manchester United, PSG, and Liverpool who won their games with three goals. Paris Saint-Germain beat RB Leipzig 3-2, Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2, while Man United beat Atalanta 3-2. The three teams are heavyweights in the UCL and could have done better, even if by ensuring a stronger defense and not conceding two goals each. Inter Milan and RB Salzburg, however, did quite well as they each scored 3 goals in their victories. Inter Milan beat Sheriff 3-1 while RB Salzburg beat Wolfsburg 3-1.
The Poor Performers: Porto, Barca, and Juve
In what were poor performances, FC Porto, Barcelona, and Juventus only managed to edge one goal over their competitors in their victories. FC Porto beat Inter Milan 1-0, Juventus beat Zenit 1-0, as did Barcelona that beat Dynamo Kyiv 1-0. Barcelona’s goal came from veteran Gerard Pique, Porto’s lone goal came from Luis Diaz and Juve’s came from Dejan Kulusevski.
In matchday 3’s poorest performance and only goalless match and draw, Sevilla drew Lille 0-0. Competition is heating up in the groups and only strong teams are already looking like they will qualify for the next round. On Sunday, Barca were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid in El Clasico, showing just how bad times are for them.
