Sevilla have won the UEFA Europa League after edging out Roma on penalties in Budapest. Sevilla made the comeback of the season, going on to win the Europa League for the seventh time. Roma were impeccably disappointed, with coach Jose Mourinho’s record of 5/5 UEL final wins shattered. Here’s all the action.

Sevilla Win the UEFA Europa League 2022-23

Sevilla are now the UEFA Europa League 2022-23 champions after they beat AS Roma 4-1 on penalties following a tight game that ended in a 1-1 deadlock in normal time. Sevilla have now lifted the UEL title for the seventh time and also qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.

Roma Lose Out on Europa League Despite a Good Performance

AS Roma have lost out on the Europa League this season, despite an impressive performance in their final against Sevilla. Coach Mourinho’s record of 5/5 UEL final wins was shattered by the loss, with ‘the special one’ losing out on a possible sixth Europa League. Roma were the best team in the first half, but lost their energy in the second half, pushing the game on to extra time. Extra time quickly came and went, with the penalties kicking off.

Sevilla are now the only team who’ve broken Mourinho’s record of never losing a Europa League final. Paulo Dybala put Roma ahead in the 34th minute but they faltered and lost two penalties when push came to shove. Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez missed their penalties. Dybala was shattered by their loss and was in tears after the final penalty was taken.

Sevilla Put on a Fantastic Performance Winning the Europa League

Sevilla pulled off a comeback in the second half to turn the tables, invoking a Gianluca Mancini own goal in the 55th minute. Sevilla then went on to hold the game at 1-1 and later scored three of their penalties before Argentinian World Cup penalty winner Gonzalo Montiel came on to take the fourth.

Montiel Penalty Retaken after Referee Rules ‘Encroachment’

Montiel first lost the penalty but the referee ruled that Roma’s keeper had gone out of the goal line, with the referee ruling encroachment, and asking the penalty to be retaken. Montiel didn’t disappoint and scored the penalty the second time, clinching the UEL title for Sevilla.

Sevilla Beat Inexperience to Win the UEL

Sevilla have now beaten their inexperience, going on to win the UEL 22-23 title. Sevilla had beaten Man United in the quarter-finals, and impressively also beaten Juventus in the semifinal. Their inexperience didn’t hold them back and they were able to muster the courage, and beat the pressure, to win the final against AS Roma. Sevilla Coach Wins the Europa League in His First Try

Sevilla coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has won the Europa League in his first try, an impressive feat. Mendilibar impressively brought his team from behind to win his first UEL title.

First Major trophy for Erik Lamela

Today’s Europa League win is the first major trophy win for Erik Lamela, who’s a former Tottenham player. Lamela played very well, going on to score a penalty and helping win the title for Sevilla.

Mourinho Gives His Runners-Up Medal to a Fan

Jose Mourinho, on being awarded the runners-up medal, gave his medal to a kid and walked off the pitch. Mourinho was visibly disappointed and today’s loss brings to question whether he’ll stay at AS Roma.
